Sonic Popping Boba

Sonic Drive-In is an American drive-in fast food hamburger restaurant chain founded in Oklahoma City, where its headquarters are also based.

Sonic Drive-In is known for its unique fast food experience, as customers can park in a covered drive-in stall, order from a speaker, and be served by a carhop on roller skates.

Customers enjoy the quick service provided by the roller-skating carhops, which bring food to customers in their vehicles, as well as its mouthwatering burgers, fries, onion rings, tater tots, their signature Extra-Long Cheese Coneys, and popping bobas.

Sonic’s popping boba is what I want to discuss in this article, and I’ll make it all clear about Sonic popping boba – its real name, flavors, and calories, and answer the most important question about popping boba availability.

What Is the Boba Drink at Sonic Called?

Well, you might know that people like to call Sonic’s boba drink “popping boba,” but these drinks are actually named “Cherry Burst” and “Cherry Burst Slush.”

Sonic had popping boba drinks in 2021 as well. Besides these two, there were “Blue Burst” and “Blue Burst Slush,” according to Best Products.

Sonic Popping Boba Flavors

Cherry Bursts obviously are cherry flavored. But the Blue Bursts, which were on Sonic’s menu in 2021, were blue raspberry flavored.

Sonic hasn’t revealed its bursting boba flavor, but many people have said that this popping boba has a green apple taste, which can be true, considering that they are green in color.

Unfortunately, I didn’t have a chance to try this by myself, but hopefully, I can do it soon. This also brings me to the next topic, where you can find out why I can’t try it.

Does Sonic Still Have Boba?

On the 25th of July 2022, Sonic announced on their Instagram that bursting bubbles are back on the menu, but for a limited time.

There’s a lot of misinformation about this topic, but the truth is that Sonic doesn’t have boba anymore! As they said in their announcement, these popping boba drinks will be available for a limited time.

On the 25th of August, Sonic announced on their social channels that they no longer offer popping boba drinks.

Some sources, like Chew Boom, stated that these drinks would be available until the 25th of September, but the official announcement was made a month earlier.

So, maybe Burst Slushes were meant to stay longer, and maybe people didn’t like it as much as they did a year before, but it’s hard to say to who they are referring by “they.”

Why Sonic Doesn’t Have Boba?

Well, the first thing to notice is that Cherry Bursts were meant to be for a limited time.

According to people’s feedback on social media, many of them complained about the straw sizes – they were too small for bobas to come through.

But it’s hard to say why; maybe Sonic was testing the product to get feedback, or maybe people didn’t like it as much as they did a year before.

Is Popping Boba Coming Back?

The honest answer is that I don’t know. It’s very hard to say, but we can make some assumptions. As we know, Sonic had popping boba drinks in 2021 and 2022 as well.

So, it seems to be a seasonal drink, and we can only hope it returns in 2023. Plus, based on the Instagram reveal post we saw earlier, their video showed people queries. Then maybe if enough people request it back, Sonic might add bursting boba to their menu.

I think these boba drinks are just seasonal hits for Sonic, and we’ll probably see them again. But, if Sonic is not planning to offer wider straws, these Burst Slushes will not get a warm welcome.

How Many Calories Are in Sonic Popping Boba?

According to Fast Food Nutrition, there were five different sizes of Sonic boba slushes, and each has its own calorie amount.

  • Mini – 140 calories
  • Small – 200 calories
  • Medium – 280 calories
  • Large – 430 calories
  • Route 44 – 590 calories

These are the Cherry Burst Slush calories and are shown per one drink.

If we ever see popping boba drinks again on Sonic menus, we know that these popping boba drinks are around these calorie amounts.
